Release the tension on side mounted extension springs by lifting the door and locking it in place on each side with a pair of locking pliers. Use a c clamp on each track to hold the door up or vise grips. One end is a fixedattachment to the garage door track or wood frame. A few years back i narrowly avoided being hit by a spring that snapped.

To adjust your garage door s side mounted springs first open your door fully and secure it in place with a c clamp below the bottom roller. They extend when the door is lowered and closed and retract as it opens. Tie the extension spring to the roller track then detach the cable from the bottom bracket with a pair of pliers. The other end is attached toa pulley through which the garage door cable is threaded.
