Install a new door lock and door knob by inserting the latch through the hole for the new parts. Using shims avoids the necessity for rebuilding the door opening to fit the pre hung door. If it s too wide cut the ends with a hacksaw. Use shims on the side of the door with the hinges to remove the gaps between the trimmer stud and the door frame.

Take out the fasteners. If there s interior trim remove that from the door as well. Remove the old door. The door should be square.

Use a drywall saw to cut shims or score them with a utility knife and snap them off. Place door shims at the top and bottom hinge locations using a long level or a straight board and a short level. Then add the center door shims. Install a drip cap or z flashing above the opening.

To install set the corner pieces on the sill then place the middle piece over top. The split jamb has a groove under the stop so it can slide over the edge of the main jamb. Install latches door handles and other hardware. Typically both jambs are furnished with casings already attached.

With all the screws out take the door from the frame and trash it. The door is attached to the main jamb which is installed first. Insert the lockset tailpieces through the latch bolt and screw the handles together by tightening the retaining screws. Starting at the bottom take the hinge screws out of the jamb.

Set it in the rough opening then level shim and nail it. The top leg should slide up behind the housewrap or tarpaper that s behind the siding. Prehung doors hang on a jamb that is split into two pieces. Put the door in the opening and slide it until the jamb is flush with the wall.

Some kits come in three pieces to better fit the opening. Double check to be sure the door opens in the desired location and direction. Remove the screws or nails that hold the old frame in place. Have another person hold the pre hung door in place while you install wooden shims where necessary.
